Getting an engineering job can seem like a daunting task. Jobs in some specialties don't come around all that often. Here are some ways to stay on top of the engineering job market.

Engineering Job Boards

These are perhaps your best bet for keeping your finger on the pulse of jobs in your area and beyond. They are a good starting point for your weekly job hunt. You will get a feel of how many jobs are open, what experience you need to have, and the people in charge of hiring. Be sure to choose a few of your favorite engineering job boards and stay on top of them regularly so that you can be consistent about applying. Putting in your applications is a hard thing to stay on top of, but it is the best way to keep the momentum for your job search.

Keeping Active in Learning

Somehow, you must keep active at learning your trade. Until you find a job that will help you advance your skills, consider volunteering, taking an internship, or working in a related field that will boost your engineering and analytical problem solving skills. Some hiring managers look favorably on scientific research or jobs that allow you to work with your hands, depending on what your ultimate goal is. The key is to stay invested in your career. People like to hire people that are on the move and working towards something. Being unemployed and unengaged makes it a lot harder to find the right job.

Be Active on LinkedIn

You might be surprised to find that jobs start coming to you when you make yourself more visible on LinkedIn. Recruiters are always looking through profiles to find candidates for job positions they need to fill. Start by beefing up your profile to include a professional photo and description. Create detailed descriptions of past job and volunteering positions. More importantly, join engineering groups and be active in them. Comment on articles you find interesting, post some information of your own, and connect with relevant professionals in your area.

Network

If you have friends in engingeering, it may help to catch up with them and see what hiring is like at your company. Networking at engineering events is also a good idea. Get professional business cards and consider putting a copy of your resume in a digital format. This way, when you meet someone, you can direct them to your online resume.

About Me
Creating A Solid Business Model

Business is never easy, but if you are like most people, you might have an idea of what you would do if you could. I started thinking about a long list of businesses that might work a few years ago, and even though it seemed like a dream at the time, I knew I had to try. Fortunately, I had people behind me that really listened to me and honestly believed in what I was doing, and so I worked with them to make things right. Within a few weeks, I had completely transformed my life, and I was impressed with the plan. Check out this blog to learn more.
